Somatic Experiencing (SE™)

What is Somatic Experiencing® (SE)?

Somatic Experiencing (SE™) is a body-oriented therapeutic approach that resolves stress, shock, and trauma stored in the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE addresses trauma as nervous system dysregulation, helping individuals move beyond fight, flight, or freeze responses to restore resilience.

Rooted in physiology, neuroscience, psychology, and indigenous healing,Somatic Experiencing (SE™) has been applied for over four decades in psychotherapy, medicine, coaching, teaching, and bodywork. It provides tools to release trapped survival energy, completing defensive responses and restoring nervous system balance.

Somatic Experiencing (SE™) recognizes trauma as unprocessed survival energy, often leading to PTSD, developmental trauma, and chronic stress. Inspired by animal stress recovery, Somatic Experiencing (SE™) guides clients to safely discharge stored trauma through gentle awareness of bodily sensations, promoting healing within a practitioner’s scope of practice.

The inherent capacity of the nervous system to self-regulate can be restored, and symptoms of stress and/or trauma can be diminished and, in some cases, even eliminated.
